Real life ref stories Steve Acton

I played for many years in a very successful amateur football team in Weston super Mare. We won many league and cup titles. Paul Bliss was our Chairman at East Worle, he left us to take over W-s-M AFC.

A couple of months into the next season he poached our manager Phil Taylor to run their reserve side. It was then when I took over as player manager and was lucky enough to win 28 trophys in 9 years.

I thought I’d taken them as far as I thought I could so decided to play for the ressies with Jaime my son who was 16. I also had passed as a referee at the age of 39 and after finally given up playing decided to ref full time which included Saturday and Sunday to start with. I was fortunate enough to ref and line on many cup final and I enjoyed refereeing just as much as playing.

On one such occasion I was on the line for a Clevedon Town U18’S  against Millfield school. I had no idea that David Beckhan’s son was playing in the game and David was a spectator. A spectator took this photo that went viral when Ref Support UK posted it as MEME.

I had no idea David Beckham was behind me and this photo is a great memory of one of my games.

At the end of 20/21 season at the age of 68 decided to hang up the whistle after 29 years as a regular active match official.

I sometimes do the odd game if my local teams cant get a ref and I still really enjoy these games.
