New Ambassador Mick Scrymgeour Ex Royal Marine.

Michael Scrymgeour

Veteran and Blue Light Veteran Support for Ref Support UK

Mick is an active County Football Referee with Durham FA and also affiliated to the Royal Navy FA who has been
involved in military football competitions and local grassroots football for over 25 years.

Mick is a former Company Sgt Major with the Royal Marines Reserve and an Iraq veteran and was delighted to act as a
military veteran ambassador for Ref Support UK.

Mick told us:

“I took up refereeing in my early forties having enjoyed playing football to a fairly good standard in my
youth, with the aim of putting something back into local grassroots football. Have refereed in all aspects of
grassroots football including youth leagues, ladies’ leagues and various Sunday leagues around the North
East.

I am always ready to support younger referees, particularly those who have a bad experience, as I
have had similar experiences ranging from a few verbals, to a full-scale crowd riot in a Sunday League
Cup Final which had to be abandoned.

That support could be a friendly chat, sympathetic ear, sharing experiences or support in preparation for
disciplinary proceedings, in fact any help that I am able to give I will gladly do so.”

Martin Cassidy CEO of Ref Support UK said

There are many active and veteran Armed Forces Match Officials in the game and we recognised as an organisation that there are certain challenges our colleagues faces that can be supported by an ambassador who is familiar or has faced similar challenges. Having some one of Mick’s credibility will bring those who use our support mechanisms a level of support that has been missing from the game. I am absolutely delighted Mick accepted our offer to become an ambassador for us and look forward to seeing how his experience can bring another level of support to what we offer as a registered charity”
